Owning a mobile boutique, I work with clients on bumping up their style all of the time. Here are some of the tips I give most often!
1. Try it on!
It may not be your color, it may be a little 2 inches or a mile out of your comfort zone- but TRY IT ON! You don't have to buy it, but you never know when you'll fall in love.
2. Not all trends are for everyone.
Not every trend is for every body type. Personally, the Piko trend is just NOT for my body. It makes me look 3x my size. I love them on other people, but just not on me, I need something more tailored. Part of knowing yourself is knowing what doesn't work- and what does.
3. Opposites Attract!
When putting together an outfit, opposites attract. Flowy with fitted, dark with bright, simple with bold pattern.
Where's the WIDEST part of your body? _________ Don't wear anything with a hemline that hits there. Also, a funky hemline can be a 10 lb diet on a hanger, because it doesn't create a line across your body.
5. If it makes you feel good, OWN it!
I see so many women try something on, love it, then turn to someone and ask for an opinion- said person then says no and crushes my client's confidence. We've seen it a million times on Say Yes to the Dress. Forget what everyone else says- WEAR WHAT YOU WANT!
A statement necklace, scarf, or vest can transform an outfit! Or have a dress or a top you LOVE for summer? Toss a cardigan on with it and wear it year round! This little white dress went from bridal shower to patriotic with the addition of the scarf.
7. Invest in good undergarments
Seriously y'all. A good bra is worth it's weight in gold. I can't tell you how many women I have- helped adjust- and when the girls are right, you're clothes fir better too!
8. Own your body
I know it's cliche, but nobody sees the imperfections that you do. Don't let those airbrushed models make you feel bad about yourself- rock it, own it, love it!
9. Don't look at the tag, look at the fit
Going with above- fit will never fail you- size will. Fit isn't just in the size- the type of fabric and cut has much more to do with it. I've had a girl leave with a 3X and a M in the same purchase- and everything looked great on her. Don't worry about what the tag says- unless it's dry clean only because nobody has time for that!
10. Don't knock stripes or bold pattern.
Not all horizontal stripes are unflattering, some are actually slimming. Not all patterns make you look bigger- it's all in the cut of the piece. Also, you can tone down a loud print by pairing it with a solid piece (tip #3!).
11. **Bonus Tip** Don't love it? Don't buy it!
I often find myself being the worst salesman ever when customers are debating on an item. My mother comes out of my mouth "If you don't love it don't buy it."
